Evangelical Groups Divided on Issue of Military Chaplains and Gay Marriage

Navy Chaplain Kay Reed officiates the civil union ceremony of Air Force Tech. Sgt. Erwynn Umali, right, and his partner Will Behrens at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst on June 23, 2012, in Wrightstown, N.J.

Some evangelical groups are gearing up for a fight on military chaplains and same-sex marriage while others say they'll seek a middle ground after the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act.

The Southern Baptist Convention, for example, which removed an Air Force chaplain in 2012 for "watching supportively" during a same-sex civil union, says it is working to better protect chaplains from any pressures to marry same-sex couples.

"Same-sex marriage is going to bring some immediate challenges when it comes to [military] chaplaincy, not only when it comes to who marries whom, but whom counsels whom," says Dr. Russell Moore, president of the convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. "So we have to fight on this end to ... tell chaplains how to advocate for themselves."

The Department of Defense has previously said no chaplain would be forced to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony if it conflicts with his or her religious beliefs. Nathan Christensen, a spokesperson for the Department of Defense, reiterated that position to U.S. News on Thursday.

But the group Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty, whose members come from evangelical or orthodox Christian backgrounds, says it remains concerned ? especially about the military marriage retreats that take place before or after deployment.

"If they include same sex-couples in those retreats, that puts chaplains and commanders in a difficult position," says Ron Crews, the group's executive director. "We are proposing that commanders offer two retreats: one for same-sex couples, and one for those who hold the traditional definition of marriage."

Some evangelical groups, however, are seeking more neutral territory. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, for one, is allowing chaplains to make decisions at a local level about how to handle gay marriage.

"We have chaplains from the ELCA who have reservations about responding to requests of same sex couples, and others who are quite responsive," says Rev. Eric Wester in the ELCA's Bureau for Federal Chaplaincy Ministries. "For chaplains who are reluctant, we fully support them making a referral to other chaplains to others who might be more supportive."

Pastor Kay Reed, a retired chaplain with ELCA, caused a minor stir when she performed a civil union ceremony in June 2012, one of the first gay marriages on a military base. But she says the "entire command was extremely supportive."

"I didn't see any push back from folks in the military," says Reed, who served as a Navy chaplain for 20 years. "I think there's sometimes an unnecessary amount of fear generated."

[ALSO: Top Military Brass to Be Cut 20 Percent]

Reed says chaplains who aren't comfortable providing pastoral care for a service member can always refer that person to another chaplain of a different faith group.

Because chaplains come from many different faiths, the LGBT military group Outserve-SLDN isn't worried about same-sex couples getting the services they need. "There are about a dozen denominations [in the chaplaincy] whose rules support doing same-sex services," says Jonathan Hopkins, a spokesman for the group. However, he said it was problematic that those denominations "may not be represented in military chaplains in the same proportion as service members" of those faiths.

While just 3 percent of service members identify with evangelical faiths, for example, some 33 percent of military chaplains are evangelical, according to the Pentagon.

New Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor coming next week ? maybe the Galaxy Note III will use it

Samsung has let the world know that it?s going to officially announce a new version of its Exynos 5 Octa mobile processor. Unfortunately, the company hasn?t unveiled too many details about this ? other than the fact that the new CPU will be ?more powerful? and ?enhanced.? So we?ll have to wait a bit until we find out exactly what the new chipset has to offer.

After the new Exynos 5 Octa is announced, Samsung will kick off a contest on Twitter, dubbed ?#ExynosEvolved Twitter giveaway.? Some lucky folks will win ?brand new, Exynos-powered devices.? More details will be unveiled next week.

New Samsung Exynos 5 Octa processor next week

The current Exynos 5 Octa (introduced in early 2013) is powering the Samsung Galaxy S4 i9500, and actually includes two processors: a quad-core ARM Cortex-A15, and a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7.

The new Exynos chipset might be used for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note III phablet (or at least for some versions of it). The Note III should be announced in early September.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen retweed an expletive message from a Kim Jong-un parody account.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the Florida Republican who retweeted an expletive-filled message, did so on purpose, her office confirmed Wednesday.

When the posting ?SH*T JUST GOT REAL PANAMA? from the Kim Jong-un parody account @KimJongNumberUn, appeared on her Twitter timeline Tuesday - many assumed a wayward intern was to blame.

But her office denied the notion, insisting the politician from Miami retweeted the message herself and made no apologies for doing so.

The original tweet came after a North Korean ship laden with weapons from Cuba was seized near the Panama Canal.

Ros-Lehtinen was born in Cuba and takes an active role in calling for change in the Communist country - even calling for Fidel Castro?s assassination.

Why Sinkholes Appear and How to Fix Them

Why They Appear

Sinkholes most commonly occur in karst terrain: regions where limestone, gypsum, salt beds, or other carbonate rock can be dissolved. Water eats away at the rock until a pit is formed. When the roof?the sediment layer that had been on top of the rock before it deteriorated?no longer supports itself, it collapses into the pit.

Sinkholes that occur on private property are the homeowner?s responsibility. Insurance may cover an evaluation and the repair if it is actually a sinkhole and not a subsidence incident?a manmade problem caused by things like collapsed or broken sewer pipes and drainpipes, broken septic tanks and buried trash, or soil that wasn?t properly compacted after excavation work.

There are two main types of sinkholes: cover subsidence and cover collapse.

Cover-subsidence holes are usually found where thick, permeable sediment covers limestone or other soluble rock. As the rock wears away underground, the sediment slowly fills in the void. Eventually the ground surface will show a circular depression.

Cover-collapse holes are more threatening. They can occur within minutes and are usually triggered by an event like heavy rainfall or drought that quickly sweeps away material, allowing the sediment covering the void to collapse suddenly.

Property owners need to be especially vigilant if they live in an area prone to sinkholes. They should check frequently for small holes in the ground or cracks in a structure?s foundation. If you live in an area with soluble rock, check local and state geological surveys for more information about a specific area.

What to Do

If a sinkhole appears that is directly threatening a house or structure, get out immediately. Report the problem to emergency personnel as well as to a building inspector, and wait for an inspection to find out if it is safe to return.

If a sinkhole occurs in the middle of the road, contact local law enforcement agencies. The area should be cordoned off immediately.

But, if the sinkhole is not impacting a house or other structure, and if it is a manageable size?1 to 3 feet in both diameter and depth?then it can be filled in. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has these recommendations for filling the hole:

? First, monitor the hole. If it does not get bigger over time, fill it in.
? Add dry-mix concrete or a concrete plug at the bottom of the hole. This will provide a solid base.
? After that, add clayey sand. Pure sand, with larger particles, feels gritty, while a fine-textured, clayey sand will feel sticky. Clayey sand will form a barrier that will help prevent water from seeping through the hole and enlarging it. Call a local contractor to find out where to buy clayey sand. If you can?t get any, it is okay to use pure, clean sand.
? Finally, add sand and topsoil on top to blend in the area with other landscaping. Additional fill may be needed at a later date, but the hole should stabilize eventually.

(AP) ? The Yemen-based branch of al-Qaida announced Wednesday that the group's No. 2 figure, a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner, has died in a U.S. drone strike.

The announcement, posted on militant websites, gave no date for the death of Saudi-born Saeed al-Shihri.

Yemeni security officials, however, said al-Shihri died of serious injuries sustained when a drone strike targeted him in November last year.

Al-Shihri had survived an earlier drone attack, in September 2012, the officials added, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Wednesday's announcement came in a video purporting to show the group's chief theologian, Ibrahim Al-Robaish, in which he eulogized al-Shihri.

In the video, al-Robaish said al-Shihri was hit by the drone while speaking on his mobile telephone in the province of Saadah, north of the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.

The authenticity of the video, which was first reported by the U.S. monitoring service SITE, could not be independently confirmed but it appeared on militant websites commonly used by al-Qaida.

In January, Yemen's official SABA news agency reported that al-Shihri died of wounds from a drone strike three months earlier.

Al-Shihri, also known as Abu Sufyan al-Azdi, fought in Afghanistan and spent six years in Guantanamo. He was returned to Saudi Arabia in late 2007 and later fled to Yemen to join the al-Qaida branch there.

In one of his last videos, which appeared on the Internet in April, al-Shihri harshly criticized Yemen's neighbor to the north, Saudi Arabia, for its policy of allowing the United States to launch deadly drone strikes from bases in the kingdom.

Al-Shihri's death is considered a major blow to the Yemen-based al-Qaida branch, known as Al-Qaida in The Arabian Peninsula. Washington considers it the most dangerous of the group's offshoots.

The branch has been linked to several attempted attacks on U.S. targets, including the foiled Christmas Day 2009 bombing of an airliner over Detroit and explosives-laden parcels intercepted aboard cargo flights in 2010.
