LaFayette mayor resigning at end of term; council member running for post

This November, municipal elections for the city of LaFayette will select a new city mayor for the first time in over 20 years.

Mayor Neal Florence, who has held the position for 23 years, has announced he will resign at the end of this term, leaving the seat open for new contenders.

Foremost among the names being thrown into the hat is Andy Arnold, current city council member for Ward 1, also a well-known teacher and coach at LaFayette High School.

Arnold declared his candidacy Monday evening, July 8, after the council voted unanimously to set the election qualifying dates for Aug. 26-28.

LaFayette operates with a ?weak mayor? type of council, wherein the five council representatives ? one from each of the four wards and one at large seat ? vote on all issues, while the mayor votes only when needed to break a tie.

Also up for grabs on Nov. 5 will be Arnold?s current Ward 1 seat as well as the Ward 2 position, which is currently held by Ben Bradford, who will be seeking re-election.

City residents who are interested in running for one of the available positions must pay a qualifying fee at the city clerk?s office in LaFayette city hall during one of the three open qualifying days in late August.
