Sandy upends final week of presidential race

KETTERING, Ohio (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy is upending the final week of the presidential race, with President Barack Obama calling off another campaign day to tour ravaged New Jersey and Republican Mitt Romney struggling to strike the right tone as he tries to close the deal with voters.

The White House announced Tuesday that Obama will not go ahead with a Wednesday campaign swing through Ohio and later said he would tour damage in New Jersey. He plans to remain in Washington to monitor recovery efforts for the storm that practically shut down New York City and spread damage across the East Coast.

Obama visited the American Red Cross near the White House on Tuesday to encourage donations and warned the storm was not done making its impact. He tried to show leadership in only the way a president can, saying he told federal authorities to cut through all red tape to get help to affected areas. "There is no excuse for inaction," he said.

Obama said he had a conference call with affected governors and mayors told them if issues arise "they can call me personally at the White House."

Romney and running mate Paul Ryan initially announced they were canceling events out of sensitivity for the millions of Americans in Sandy's path. But with only a week left to try to toss Obama from office, the GOP campaign was back on Tuesday with events in the critical Midwestern swing states of Ohio, Iowa and Wisconsin, albeit with changes to the program.

"We have heavy hearts, as you know, with all the suffering going on, in a major part of our country," Romney said before helping collect food donations for relief efforts. "A lot of people hurting this morning, they were hurting last night. And the storm goes on."

Romney spoke for less than five minutes and avoided politics at what his campaign billed as a "storm relief event" in the same Ohio gymnasium as his previously scheduled political rally and with the same entertainment from country music singer Randy Owen. The event was moved up four hours and there were none of the usual attacks on the president, who was at the White House overseeing the response.

Effusive praise for Obama's leadership came in Tuesday from a surprising source ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican who has been campaigning for Romney across the country and who is a pointed Obama critic. He said in a series of morning television show interviews that Obama was in touch throughout the night as the storm struck New Jersey, including a call at midnight, and effectively expedited much-needed disaster relief.

"The president has been all over this and he deserves great credit," Christie told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." ''I've been on the phone with him, like I said, yesterday personally three times. He gave me his number at the White House, told me to call him if I need anything, and he absolutely means it. It's been very good working with the president."

The White House released a photo of the president receiving an update on the response from the Situation Room. Vice President Joe Biden participated in the video-conference from Ohio, where he spent part of the day holding up in a Columbus hotel before flying to Florida to resume campaign events Wednesday.

As he boarded his plane, Biden said it was unclear when Obama would return to campaigning and brushed off a question about the impact on the election. "Honest to God, I don't think anyone's thought about that," Biden said.

The president's campaign also tried to rise above the political fray in an email to supporters asking for donation to the Red Cross. "Soon enough we'll need to get back to work on the most important campaign of our lifetime," wrote campaign manager Jim Messina. "But the most important thing at this moment is that you and your loved ones are staying safe, and that the rest of us do what we can to help speed the recovery."

Millions were left without power as the deadly storm whipped its way through presidential battlegrounds like North Carolina, Virginia and New Hampshire and sprawled as far as the Great Lakes, where gales threatened Ohio's and Wisconsin's lakeside regions.

Some election centers in the affected states were shut down, but early voting continued in areas outside Sandy's path. Ryan sent an email to supporters in Ohio Tuesday, asking them to take advantage of early voting "to help keep our momentum going."

Romney helped collect grocery bags of donations from lined-up supporters after his brief remarks in Ohio, then headed outside to load bottled water, boxes of diapers and pallets of canned goods on a rented truck for delivery.

Romney refused to answer repeated shouted questions from reporters about how he would run the Federal Emergency Management Agency as president. He said during the Republican primary race that he wants to return control of some federal functions to the states.

Asked whether Romney favors additional federal aid to help recover and rebuild from Sandy, Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg responded: "A Romney-Ryan administration will always ensure that disaster funding is there for those in need. Period."

The storm wasn't entirely off limits from politics. Campaigning on Obama's behalf in Minnesota, former President Bill Clinton resurrected a line from Romney's GOP convention speech to suggest that he was flippant about Obama's advocacy of climate change legislation.

At the late August convention, Romney ridiculed Obama as someone who "promised to begin to slow the rise of the oceans and heal the planet. My promise ... is to help you and your family."

"In my part of America, we would have liked if someone had done that yesterday," Clinton said, noting how oceanfront cities are coping with rising waters more frequently.

While officials in Obama's Chicago-based campaign had hoped he would be in battleground states every day this week, they said they weren't losing any ground by having him in Washington. Obama was still getting local media coverage because of his work on the storm. And aides said Clinton's active campaign schedule this week was helping to boost Democratic voter enthusiasm.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there were no plans to cancel Obama's campaign rallies Thursday in Nevada, Colorado, and Ohio, though officials said they continued to monitor the storm. The president may try to make up for lost time by adding more events to an already busy schedule this weekend and into next week, but those plans were still being finalized.

Romney planned to resume an aggressive campaign schedule beginning Wednesday, with three events in Florida with former Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio. He planned to return to Virginia Thursday, after canceling events there Sunday before the storm.

Aides say they are reviewing his plans on almost an hourly basis, but expect the campaign to get back to normal. They are still considering a plan to send Romney to New Jersey later in the week, where he could meet with victims and gauge the storm damage with Christie. The move would follow the path Romney took after Hurricane Isaac threatened the Republican National Convention, when he toured storm damage in Louisiana with Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, also a supporter.

At the same time, Romney aides insist they are serious about expanding their efforts in battleground states largely considered safe territory for Democrats.

The campaign is launching a statewide advertising push in Pennsylvania, which aides say is in play, although Romney had no plans to visit the state. Ryan planned to campaign across his home state of Wisconsin in an attempt to expand the playing field, before heading to battleground Colorado Thursday. The campaign also invited local media to cover Ryan's plane landing Tuesday over the state border in Minnesota, which has been in the Democratic column since 1976.

The Romney camp also announced that a political rally in Des Moines, Iowa, would go on at the same time as previously scheduled Tuesday night, with Ann Romney filling in for her husband as the headliner. Earlier she visited a campaign office in Allouez, Wis., and urged donations to the Red Cross while describing what a compassionate president her husband would be. "I know the character of this man. I know he is such a good person," she said.

Ryan was slated to drop by campaign offices in his home state of Wisconsin on Tuesday to thank the volunteers helping to collect relief supplies.

Ryan spokesman Michael Steel told reporters that the congressman participated in separate videoconference town halls with voters in Iowa, Florida and Ohio. Reporters were not advised of the calls and were not invited to listen.

Chicago Heights, IL Patch:

Jesse Jackson Jr. wants his constituents to know that he loves them to death, according to a Matteson pastor.

In his Sunday sermon at Victory Apostolic Church in Matteson, the Rev. Andrew Singleton Jr. spoke of a two-hour phone conversation he says he had with Jackson, who recently returned to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Audio of the sermon was sent to Patch, but church officials said they did not make the recording. Officials at the church, however, confirmed Singleton's mention of his conversation with Jackson during the sermon.

Baked beets with herbs and butter

These delicious, flavorful, light beets work great as a side dish. Serve them with cucumber yogurt sauce, grilled lamb sausage, and couscous for an easy and delicious dinner idea.

By Eve Fox,?Garden of Eating / October 25, 2012

Baking beets, rather than roasting them, is a faster process. After about 30-45 minutes in the oven, slip the skins off and slice them to a smaller size.

Garden of Eating

We got the most lovely bunch of purple beets at our last CSA pick up. I used a few by grating them raw into salads (yum!), then proceeded to ignore them in order to focus on some of the more time-sensitive veggies that needed to be dealt with quickly. Luckily, beets keep for quite a while in the fridge if you remove the greens and this batch seemed perfectly content to cool their heels in the crisper for nearly two weeks while I dealt with more pressing culinary concerns.

I typically roast beets ? they're delicious that way -? but I was not feeling excited about waiting quite that long for them to cook so I decided to try baking them, instead ? something I'd never tried before. With baked beets, the cooking time is sped up by putting a small amount of water in the bottom of the baking dish to steam the beets while they cook. Then you slip the skins off just as you would with roasted or boiled beets. It's a bloody-looking business but it washes right off.

I was also attracted to the simple idea of tossing the warm beets with butter, herbs, salt, pepper, and a little lemon juice. So I ran out to our little container garden and gathered up oregano, thyme, and basil and chopped them up.

The results were both quicker and less messy than roasting and deliciously flavorful and light. The baked beets are a little bit softer than roasted and the fresh herbs complement their natural sweetness while the butter makes it feel just a wee bit decadent and the salt, pepper, and lemon juice add a little brightness and jazz.

I served them with a thick cucumber yogurt sauce spiked with fresh mint (have I mentioned how much I love whole milk Greek yogurt for this purpose?), grilled lamb sausages from our favorite butcher shop, and my own interpretation of one of those Near East boxed couscous mixes. I use this very tasty, fine whole wheat French couscous that we get in bulk at our local health food store, some saut?ed red onion, a lot of chopped fresh herbs, olive oil, salt, and pepper -- it's much better than the box.

The beets were at least as tasty the next day as leftovers, too. I will definitely be making these again.

Baked beets with herbs & butter
Serves 4-6

1 large bunch of beets (any kind), washed with tops and tails removed

?2 tablespoons butter (you could substitute olive or walnut oil if you do not eat dairy)

Sea salt, to taste

Freshly ground pepper, to taste

Big handful of fresh herbs (thyme, basil, parsley, oregano, etc.,), washed, dried and chopped

1-2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice or mild vinegar like champagne or white balsamic

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place the beets in a shallow baking dish and add half a cup of water to the bottom. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and place in the oven.

2. Bake for 30-45 minutes (cooking time will depend on the size of the beets you're using), until beets are soft when poked with a fork. Remove from the oven and let sit, uncovered until cool enough to handle. Slip the skins off and remove any roots or tough pieces left over from the tops with a knife, then slice to whatever thickness and shape you desire.

3. Toss with the herbs, butter, salt, and pepper then sprinkle a squeeze of fresh lemon juice or vinegar of your choice. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Nation's fastest road to open in Central Texas

Motorists, start your engines. It's opening day for the last leg of a Texas toll road with the nation's fastest speed limit.

The final 41-mile stretch of Texas Highway 130 will open Wednesday after three years of construction. The speed limit will be 85 mph.

The toll road is intended to help alleviate the increasingly crowded Interstate 35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio, which are two of the state's largest metropolitan areas.

The new stretch will be from Mustang Ridge, about 10 miles south of Austin's international airport, to Interstate 10 just east of Seguin. A 50-mile stretch bypassing Austin is already open.

Tolls for personal vehicles displaying an electronic toll tag will be about 15 cents per mile. But no tolls will be collected until Nov. 11.

Nexus 10 manual shots reveal a curvy Samsung-made tablet

Android Central

The Nexus 10 tablet reports have been gaining momentum over the past couple of weeks, though we've yet to see any actual pictures of the rumored 10-inch tablet. Today we have the next best thing, though, as the manual for the device has surfaced on Korean site Seeko.co.kr, clearly showing the Nexus 10 branding and a curvaceous tablet design.

The Nexus 10, shown in drawings above, seems to draw inspiration from the Galaxy Nexus and Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 line. Front-facing stereo speakers can clearly be seen, and a GNex-style notification LED can be seen near the bottom of the tablet. Interestingly, the tablet is also labeled as having microHDMI-out and a rear-facing camera, unlike the Nexus 7. There also appear to be separate charging and microUSB slots -- possibly because the tablet might require more juice than microUSB alone can deliver.

Around the back there's Nexus and Samsung branding, leaving little doubt as to what this is and who's behind it.

Sources familiar with the device tell Android Central that this is indeed an accurate representation of the upcoming Nexus tablet.

The Nexus 10 is reported to be powered by a next-gen Samsung Exynos 5 chip, with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean running on a iPad-beating 10-inch, 2560x1600 display. We'll likely learn much more about this new flagship tablet at Google's "Playground" event next Monday.

More pics after the break.

Congratulations, EA, You Just Released Your 10th Military Shooter in 5 Years

Congratulations, EA, You Just Released Your 10th Military Shooter in 5 YearsIt was a long time coming?longer than the gap between the announcement of the iPad 3 and the iPad 4?but Electronic Arts has finally released another military shooter.

The game is called Medal of Honor Warfighter. It's EA's first military shooter since 2011's Battlefield 3 (we're not counting this past winter's sci-fi first-person shooter Syndicate).

They make a lot of these kinds of games. Before MOH:W and BF3, there was, of course, BBC and AO2.

Why, in the past five years, we got?

That's 10 military shooters. Almost two a year! (Not counting map packs and expansions.

Some may say that military shooters are inherently bad. They're not.

Some might say this is all EA does. Not true! They also make Dead Spaces, FIFAs, SimCitys and a whole lot more.

But who would dare accuse them of neglecting the military FPS? No one.

Coming next year from EA: Battlefield 4, another Army of Two and *maybe* whatever the former creators of Medal of Honor and Call of Duty are cooking up next. Plus: Crysis 3, but we're not going to count that.

What about EA's rival, big bad Activision? We won't count their James Bond FPSes. We didn't count EA's either. (You know, we didn't count EA's sci-fi shooter Crysis games, either. Ditto: Bulletstorm since it was a space-pirate FPS.) From Activision, we wind up with just one Call of Duty game a year. That's five in five years. Add a few more if you want to count standalone portable games, but Activision still can't match EA's military shooter fervor.

Man, why is EA so into making games like these? Any ideas?

ESRB adds ratings for downloadable games

5 hrs.

While?your kid plays a game downloaded through his Xbox, he may be telling others exactly where he is in the real world. And you thought all you had to worry about was what happened within the game.

Parents concerned about the information their kids share when playing downloaded games on devices like an?Xbox or PlayStation?are getting help from the same group that rates boxed games. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), the self-regulatory body for the video game industry, Wednesday extended its ratings system to downloadable games and now includes guides about the kinds of personal information a game is able to access.

The rating system for digitally delivered games is the same as you see on the physical games you buy in a store, familiar ratings like Everyone, Teen and Mature, and content descriptors that denote violence and sexual themes.

The new interactive element ratings shed light on?privacy ?aspects of gameplay. They include:

  • "Shares Info": Personal information such as email address, phone number or?credit card ?is provided to third parties
  • "Shares Location": Can display the player?s location with other players
  • "Users Interact": Players can get in direct communication with others through social media and networks

Buyers see the ratings prior to downloading the game. However, these new ratings don?t say exactly what gets shared. For example, you won?t know if a game rated ?Shares Info? only gives access to an email address or also provides your child?s phone number.

ESRB ratings are assigned through an online questionnaire that the developer completes; they are not determined by independent reviewers.

Participation by game developers and download services is optional. Services implementing the new system include Xbox LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation Certified devices, Nintendo eShop, Wii Shop Channel and ?Windows 8.

Apple debuts iPad mini along with 4th generation tablet

En route to unveiling the world?s worst kept secret in the iPad mini, Apple today debuted more than just a refresh of the classic 9.7-inch tablet. Hello 4th generation iPad.

The iPad mini, which surprisingly will arrive connected to the LTE network, will be priced starting at $329 for a 16GB WiFi-only model. The iPad mini and the 4th generation iPad will be available for pre-order on Friday, October 16. Both devices will ship and hit stores on November 2.

The iPad mini comes with a 7.9-inch screen and 1024 X 768 resolution (which is comparable to earlier edition iPad models). The iPad mini also will include an Apple A5 processor, 10 hours of battery, and a new Lightning connector.

As Apple?s Phil Schiller boasts: ?it is every inch an iPad?.

The bigger, more controversial, surprise has to do with the significantly-enhanced iPad. While many of us were expecting a refresh of the iPad with a new Lightning connector and improved ?internals,? the improved A6X chip as well as new features like HD Facetime make the third generation model - launched earlier this year - basically obsolete.

As we await the iPad mini to roll out in the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see what types of apps perform the best on the new device. While the 4:3 aspect ratio and 1024 X 768 resolution will make it possible for literally any existing iPad app to be downloaded to the more diminutive device, a new version of iBooks could unveil a new generation of education apps.

SiriusXM Town Hall With NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell And Michael Strahan On SiriusXM NFL RadioGetty Images

The Pro Bowl remains on the endangered species list.

In what hardly will classify as the most dramatic revelation of the year, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday at a town hall meeting sponsored by SiriusXM radio that the Pro Bowl could be abandoned, eventually.

?It?s really tough to force competition and after a long season to ask those guys to go out and play at the same level that they play is pretty tough,? Goodell said.? ?And I made it very clear last year because I really thought the quality of the game last year was way below standards and if we?re going to play like that we should just eliminate the game.?

He?s right.? No player who has made it through a long season of games that count healthy enough to play another game has interest in playing hard in a game that doesn?t count.

So get rid of it.? Be done with it.? Yes, it will result in a lost opportunity to hit the cash register, given that plenty of folks will watch bad football involving good players.? But if it doesn?t do justice to the shield, then it should be abandoned, permanently.

The problem is that the players still want to play the game ? since it entails a free week in Hawaii and, in its current form, a game of two-hand touch in full pads.? And as long as people keep watching it, it will be hard to stop playing it.

?I was leaning that way,? Goodell said.? ?The players asked if they could take another crack at it and they wanted to try to work to make the game more competitive.? Obviously, I support that but if we can?t accomplish that kind of a standard I?m inclined not to play it any longer.?

Thus, this year?s edition could go a long way toward determining the future of the game.? Which means that even more of us will tune in to see just how much better than really bad it will be.

Which will make it even harder to pull the plug, now matter how badly it needs to be pulled.

Finance educator: Students lack credit knowledge, education | TCU ...

Some students have not begun to build their credit score for the future.

Equifax, a credit reporting agencies, defines credit as "a mathematical model designed to predict credit risk, based on data contained within your credit file."?

A credit score is given a numerical value between 250 and 850. The higher a person's credit score is, the more a likely lender is to give them a loan. Employers and landlords also look at credit scores before they hire or approve leases.

Greg Kolesar, a senior computer science major, said the main reason some students are not aware of the need to build credit is because it is not taught in school. He said one of the perceptions some students see is that credit has a bad reputation, especially after the economic crisis a few years back.

Personal finance educator at University of Idaho Extension Luke Erickson agreed with what Kolesar believed. The reason students have a lack of knowledge about credit is the lack of education, he said. ?Erickson attributes the lack of knowledge to how credit has grown in importance.

By creating a game similar to the show "Who wants to be a Millionare?" Erickson hopes to educate students about everything credit entails.

Erickson said that the importance of credit has grown?over the past ten years.? A decade ago, it did not have a big impact, he said. ?Then five years ago it was crucial in lending. ?Presently, credit is important in almost all aspects of life.

Mollie Johns, a senior marketing major, and McKenzie Butler, a freshman business major, said they did not know how to build credit. Butler said she uses her parent's credit card and was not sure how to build credit.

Some students know about building credit, but are hesitant to begin. Philip Armendarez, a junior accounting major, said he knows about credit, but lacks the motivation to begin growing his credit.

Others knew that they need to get started as soon as possible. Jordan Prather, a junior nursing major, said she talked to a banker to learn how to start building credit. She said she motivated herself because she know how important it is for the future.

Prather said the banker told her to charge under half of the credit card's limit. Prather also said she always paid off her balance before she receives her bill.

Creditcards.com has ten ways to help students build their credit. Some of their tips include how to get a credit card, getting the right card for each customer, and when the customer should use their card.??

For more ways to help build a credit score, you can visit this website.

Syria exposes Lebanon's thin veneer of stability

BEIRUT (AP) ? Potentially the most unstable country in the Middle East, Lebanon for the most part has stayed on the sidelines of the Arab Spring, keeping up appearances as an oasis of relative modernity, commerce and good times.

But the spillover effects of the Syrian war are ripping off that thin veneer.

Beneath the surface lurk the same forces that devastated the country during its years of civil war, with simmering hatreds still dividing Muslims and Christians, Sunni and Shiites, and secular and fundamentalist groups. Outside forces are still arrayed, militias are still armed and the country seems forever on the verge of tearing itself apart.

"Of all Syria's neighbors, Lebanon is the weakest, the most political and ideologically polarized and split among sectarian lines," said Fawaz A. Gerges, head of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics. "The fear is not if the Syrian conflict will spill over ? but whether it has already reached the streets of Beirut."

The assassination of Lebanon's intelligence chief in a car bomb Friday is threatening to upend a fragile political balance in Lebanon, a country plagued by decades of strife ? much of it linked to political and military domination by Damascus.

The funeral for Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan descended into chaos over the weekend as soldiers fired tear gas at protesters who tried to storm the government palace. The demonstrators were furious at a leadership they consider beholden to Syria, blaming al-Hassan's death on the regime in Damascus.

Al-Hassan, 47, was a powerful opponent of Syria's influence in Lebanon.

In the hours following the funeral, gunmen fought street battles in Beirut and the northern city of Tripoli. Sectarian clashes killed at least five people, and on Monday cracks of gunfire rang out in Beirut as soldiers and armored personnel carriers with heavy machine guns took up position on major thoroughfares and dismantled roadblocks.

The outburst of violence appeared to be a sign of a nation hurtling toward civil war.

But this is Lebanon, where traditions of social freedoms, factional loyalties and fanaticism are held in a political balance that gives no group full power to force its agenda nationwide. When that balance is disrupted, such as by Friday's assassination, the result is another cycle of violence that the country appears powerless to escape.

It's too early to know if the al-Hassan killing will plunge the country back into war.

But his death does not appear to be having the kind of galvanizing effect seen in 2005, when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was killed in a truck bombing along Beirut's waterfront. Hariri's assassination sparked thundering street protests in Lebanon that forced Damascus to withdraw its tens of thousands of troops from the country after three decades.

Al-Hassan's killing, seven years later, comes at a time of deep divisions both inside Lebanon and beyond. Sectarian tensions already were enflamed over the Syrian civil war, the bloodiest and most protracted crisis of the Arab Spring.

Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims and the militant group Hezbollah have tended to back Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose tiny Alawite sect is an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Hezbollah, the most powerful political and military force in Lebanon, is enduring its own troubles. Backed by Iran and Syria, Hezbollah faces the possibility of losing a crucial ally if Syrian rebels manage to topple Assad.

Its reputation as a popular resistance movement already has taken a severe beating for siding with Syria against the anti-Assad uprising even after it supported Arab revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Bahrain.

Assad's fall would be a nightmare scenario for Hezbollah. Any new regime led by the country's majority Sunnis would likely be far less friendly to Shiite Hezbollah, or even outright hostile. Iran remains the group's most important patron, but Syria is a crucial supply route. Without it, Hezbollah will struggle to get money and weapons as easily.

Despite all these divisions, there were hopes that Lebanon might ride out the Syrian crisis.

While the Arab Spring turmoil swept the Middle East, it appeared to leapfrog over Lebanon. Lebanon escaped the tumult in part because its weak government produced no dictator to overthrow ? not because the population was satisfied.

That same weakness makes the country vulnerable to manipulation by its neighbors.

Many Lebanese blame Damascus for al-Hassan's killing, saying his work was disrupting Syria's power and influence here.

He headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon. He also led the inquiry that implicated Syria and Hezbollah in Hariri's assassination.

Michael Azzi, an 18-year-old interior design student in Beirut, said regional conflicts always blow up in Lebanon.

"Lebanon is becoming a country where everyone can throw their trash," Azzi said. "There are some Lebanese who are always ready to burn their country at the orders of foreign countries."

How do you keep your fireplace safe? The best tools you have are your eyes.

With regular visual inspections both inside your home and out, you?ll make sure your fireplace is in good shape for the burning season.

CHECKING FROM THE OUTSIDE

Examine the chimney to make sure a chimney cap is present and in good repair. The metal cap keeps animals, rain and snow out of the chimney while acting as a spark arrester that prevents hot embers from landing on your roofing.

If you have a multistory home or a steep roof, play it safe and use a pair of binoculars to check the chimney cap from the ground.

While you?re at it, make sure of the following things:

? There is no bird?s nest or buildup of debris on the chimney cap.

? There are no tree limbs above or near the chimney.

? The mortar and bricks on the chimney aren?t crumbling or missing.

? The chimney rises at least 2 feet above where it exits the roof.

? The chimney crown ? the sloping cement shoulders at the top of the chimney ? is beveled, which helps airflow.

? The flue liner is visible above the chimney crown.

? The chimney is plumb and not leaning to one side or the other.

? The roof flashing is tight against the chimney.

If you spot anything amiss, call a licensed chimney professional or mason to remedy the problem. For pricey jobs, be sure to get a second estimate.

LOOKING INSIDE THE HOME

With a flashlight, inspect the flue damper to make sure it opens, closes and seals properly.

?If the damper doesn?t seal well, you?ll lose a tremendous amount of heat from the home when the fireplace isn?t in use,? said Gary Spolar, a licensed sweep and owner of Century Chimney in northeast Ohio.

With the damper open, check the flue for combustible material, such as animal nests or other foreign objects. You should be able to see daylight at the top.

Inspect the fireplace surround, hearth and firebox to make sure there are no cracked bricks or missing mortar. Damage inside the firebox is serious; if you suspect damage, have a professional fireplace and chimney inspection. An inspection costs anywhere from $79 to $500.

Also, check for obvious signs of moisture inside the firebox, which could mean a faulty chimney cap.

INSPECTING A GAS FIREPLACE

We enjoy gas fireplaces because they?re low-maintenance ? but that doesn?t mean they?re no-maintenance.

? Inspect the glass doors for cracks or latch issues.

? Check that gas logs are in the proper position.

? Turn gas off at the shutoff valve and test the igniter.

? Ignite the fire and look for clogged burner holes. If present, turn off gas and clear obstructions with a pin or needle.

Quickel Evangelical Lutheran church celebrates 250 years

Special service honors 14 longtime members of Quickel Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Norma Gates has been a member of Quickel Evangelical Lutheran Church for 89 years, since birth. Her mother didn't believe in infant baptism and had Gates baptized 74 years ago. YORK DAILY RECORD/SUNDAY NEWS - PAUL KUEHNEL (Paul Kuehnel)

Born into the church and baptized, confirmed and married there. It all happened at Quickel Evangelical Lutheran Church.

"My kids got baptized here," said Ethel Wolfgang, 85, of York city. "We were raised in the church. This is home."

Wolfgang and 13 other members of the congregation were recognized during special Sunday services for being baptized in the church for 75 or more years. The service kicked off the church's 250th anniversary celebrations.

Family is key at the Conewago Township church. It is the reason most of the 75-year members continue to bring their own families, with four or more generations filling the pews. Most of their families lived nearby and family attendance started with their grandparents.

"They always said don't talk about people at Quickel, someone will be related," joked Joyce Myers, 83, of York city, Wolfgang's sister.

Church members have seen many changes from the inside out, including the addition of air conditioning, and the shift to services with more liturgy.

The church used to be combined with a Reformist church, but the union was dissolved in the 1950s. Members fondly remembered the men's quartet singing during past services, the picnics and the music played before the annual Memorial Day service.

Sunday school used to be held in the balcony, with three classes, one in each section. The teachers' words drifted over the pews below.

"You listened to whoever spoke the loudest," Myers said.

Harvest Home took place annually, when farmers would bring in produce that was donated to the Lutheran home. The women would can peaches that were donated to the home as well, but stopped when state regulations changed.

"A few years ago they started making the blankets," added Wolfgang, a "few years" being closer to 20. The quilts are donated to Lutheran World Relief and crocheted baby afghans to Access-York.

Communion used to be given quarterly, only every three months, and is now every Sunday.

"I think everyone in the church was here on Communion day," said Norma Gates, 89, of York city.

Gates has belonged to the church since birth, but her mother did not believe in infant baptism. Gates was not baptized until she was 15, leaving her one year shy of 75 years baptized in the church.

"It's just been my family all my life," Gates said. "If I don't come to church, I feel like I'm missing something."

Gates and those recognized Sunday also lived through an important change in the church council. Gates was the first woman to join. Now the council is evenly split in members between men and women.

"My father was on the council and I told him, nominate me. He wouldn't even nominate me. But I was on later," Myers said.

The congregation has always been small, but it continues to grow with new members joining regularly, according to Rev. Barbara Barry.

"We look backward at our past as we look forward into the future," said Barry. "We are small, but mighty."

MORENO VALLEY: Residents warned to protect pets from coyotes ...

Posted on | October 14, 2012 | Comments

Animal control officers have warned residents near Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Course to protect their pets from coyotes, which attacked at least one dog last month.

An unidentified pet owner told officers that three coyotes attacked his dog and ran away with it into the foothills after he released his dog from its leash to chase a ball on the golf course. The owner also said he saw two more coyotes but they weren?t part of the attack.

Pet owners should keep their pets close them on leashes when they walk them, especially near the foothills around the golf course.

Officers say no other recent pet attacks have been reported. On Oct. 5, a dead coyote was found at Indian Street and Gentian Avenue, officers said.

Officers say the golf course area is a coyote habitat and it?s common for coyotes to attack small pets that are left unattended.
